POINTS OF CONTACT

"We favor the simple expression of the complex thought. We are for the large shape because it has the impact of the unequivocal. We wish to reassert the picture plane. We are flat forms because they destroy illusion and reveal truth."

Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko, 1943 in a letter to The New York Times art critic Edward Alden Jewell.

I began this series attempting to flatten the image, compressing perspective in order to heighten the patterning within a subject and produce photographs that were complex and engaging but held no narrative.

These photographs revealed a similar patterning to the physical structure of the brain and I took this as a point of departure to produce images that mimic the neural pathways, focusing on patterns captured either by specific selection of the subject or created by a more complex juxtaposition of several images, creating a 'double exposure' at the printing stage by layering multiple transparencies.

The large-scale photographs float within the gallery space and the slow moving image of the surface of the sea along with its dislocated sound, aim to immerse the viewer within the space while bringing their attention to the surface of the work.
